Meteorology and Air Pollution The earth's atmosphere is about miles deep. That thickness and volume sometimes are suggested to be enough to dilute all of the chemicals and particles thrown into it.

However, 95% of this air mass is within 12 miles of the earth's surface. This mile depth contains the air we breathe as well as the pollutants we. Abstract.

Most air pollution phenomena occur in the lower part of the atmosphere called the planetary boundary layer, or PBL. The PBL (which is sometimes called the friction layer) is defined as “the region in which the atmosphere experiences surface effects through vertical exchanges of momentum, heat and moisture” (Panofsky and Dutton, ).

Air pollution meteorology deals with meteorological processes occurring close to the earth’s surface, including the effects of meteorology on air pollutants and the effects of pollutants on meteorology.

Recent research in this area by Prof. Jon Kahl and students has included studies of the adequacy of the popular Pasquill classification. An air pollution ecosystem is shown schematically in Figure 1.

The size of the ecosystem may be as small as a village or as large as the world. In all cases, the atmosphere is an integral component, transporting substances from sources to receptors and, on most occasions, diluting the pollution to acceptable levels.

Effects of air pollution There have been a number of books which have given the effects of air pollution in detail (Stern, A.C. ; Faith, W.L. and A.A. Atkisson Jr. ; Perkins, H.C. and Magill, P.L. et al. However the effects are presented very briefly here, in order to have the continuity.

On the other hand, in cities like Bangkok, Beijing, Delhi, Dhaka, and Manila, with flat terrains, the meteorology tends to have higher impact on either dispersing or retaining the air pollution.

In this regards, a study of air movement over urban areas can help us better understand the. Air Pollution Meteorology and Dispersion provides a concise yet thorough review of the basic theories, models, experiments, and observations of pollutant dispersal in the atmosphere.

It offers the theoretical and empirical bases of frequently used dispersion models while emphasizing the limitations and uncertainties inherent in these models/5(4).
